How to Properly Dust an Office

August 28, 2015 by Devon

Creepy, crawly dust mites collectively linger throughout your office space. If not cleaned on a regular basis, the dust piles will accumulate on most of your station’s surfaces. Dust negatively effects your work environment by creating a dirty, messy, and unhealthy zone. Make dusting a top priority during the cleaning process. To stay on task, create a dusting schedule for your janitorial staff (or yourself) to follow. Nightly, weekly, or monthly, dusting should always be a key component integrated into your cleaning specifications.

PREP: Get your dusters ready! Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy . WARNING.. You will get dirty! Fighting dust is your main goal and it can be a messy process. For your safety, wear protective eye gear, a mask to cover your face, and knee pads if you’re tackling low areas. You don’t want to end up with debris in your eye or a mouthful of dust. Cover any surfaces that need protection with a drop cloth or tarp. Perform a quick cleaning of all areas; throw away any unnecessary objects or paperwork you don’t need. These unwanted goods are what we like to call, “dust collectors”.

MATERIALS: 2 key words to keep in mind while shopping for dusting tools are: BENDABLE and EXTENDABLE. These two characteristics allow you to dust hard-to-reach places including high ceilings and in between surfaces. Consider using the following dusting tools: Microfiber cloths, extendable lambs wool, synthetic or feather duster, Swiffer, furniture polish, etc.

CLEAN: Always begin from top to bottom. High surfaces should always be dusted first. This will make your dusting process run efficiently and quickly. Once you start dusting from the top, you will notice dust being pulled by gravitational force down to areas below.  Depending on how messy your facility’s high areas are, objects on your desk may become covered in dust. Prevent dust from falling on your desk’s items (creating more things needed to be dusted) by covering with a drop cloth.
