How to Clean Upholstered Furniture

May 1, 2012 by Devon

Hi Folks! Here is Apple Corps’ secret to cleaning upholstered furniture. The best way to keep upholstered furniture looking good is to vacuum it on a regular basis. This is something most of us don’t do because dust and some types of dirt on upholstery may not be very visible. As a result, the furniture becomes so dirty that a lot of people end up throwing it away. A costly decision for sure! Other alternatives are cleaning the upholstery yourself or hiring a professional cleaner.

There are different ways to clean upholstery. Upholstery cleaning products are readily available and some are so simple to use that you can clean the fabric by hand, as long as the fabric isn’t too soiled. Another method for the do-it-yourselfers is to rent a machine that can clean carpets and upholstery. The other alternative is to hire a professional cleaner.

It is important to remember to test clean an inconspicuous area before cleaning the entire piece of furniture. There are many different types of fabric which responds differently to moisture, cleaning methods, and cleaning solutions. Some fabrics contain glazing that may end up being removed during the cleaning. Some fabrics may shrink, some may stretch, some spots may run, and some colors may fade.

On the average, carpets tend to be cleaned ten times more frequently than upholstery is. Upholstered furniture is quite expensive to replace and therefore it makes good sense to clean it on a regular basis. If you’re looking to save some money and feel comfortable cleaning it yourself, then this may be your best alternative. If you’re unsure of it yourself then call a professional cleaner.
